چکیده

1 Introduction Phonological representations are typically thought of as abstract: for example, phonemes are argued to be comprised of abstract subphonemic units of some sort, whether distinctive features (e.g., Chomsky & Halle 1968), articulatory gestures (e.g., Browman & Goldstein 1989), or acoustic-phonetic dimensions (e.g., Pierre-humbert 2000). There is direct evidence that people are sensitive to these phonemic and subphemic units. A good example comes from studying speech errors: as shown in (1) and (2), the phrase " big and fat " can sometimes be mispronounced by transposing whole segments (as in (1), where two initial stops are switched), but also just parts of segments (as in (2), where only the voicing appears to be switched between the initial stops; Fromkin 1973).

Learning Abstract Phonological from Auditory Phonetic Categories: An Integrated Model for the Acquisition of Language-Specific Sound Categories

We introduce a two-stage model for the perceptual acquisition of speech sound categories within the framework of Stochastic Optimality Theory and the Gradual Learning Algorithm [1]. During the first stage, learning of language-specific sound categories by infants is driven by distributional evidence in the linguistic input. This auditory-driven learning leads to a warping of the baby’s perceptu...

The abstract representations in speech processing.

Speech processing by human listeners derives meaning from acoustic input via intermediate steps involving abstract representations of what has been heard. Recent results from several lines of research are here brought together to shed light on the nature and role of these representations. In spoken-word recognition, representations of phonological form and of conceptual content are dissociable....

Phonological generalization from distributional evidence

We propose a model of L2 phonological learning in which the acquisition of novel phonological category inventories proceeds not by mapping L2 inputs onto existing category inventories available in L1 and other already known languages, but rather through general categorization processes in which L1 and other language knowledge serves as an inductive bias. This approach views linguistic knowledge...

Towards a Substantively Biased Theory of Learning

0. Introduction There has recently been much debate concerning the nature of representations of phonological objects, particularly with regard to the role of abstract phonological constructs such as features and natural classes. This debate has extended to include differing notions about how phonological knowledge is learned and represented in the mind. The goal of this paper is to provide evid...

Are Distributional Representations Ready for the Real World? Evaluating Word Vectors for Grounded Perceptual Meaning

Distributional word representation methods exploit word co-occurrences to build compact vector encodings of words. While these representations enjoy widespread use in modern natural language processing, it is unclear whether they accurately encode all necessary facets of conceptual meaning. In this paper, we evaluate how well these representations can predict perceptual and conceptual features ...
